After the breakup of
the Soviet Union,
Russia played its
first international
match against Mexico
on August 16, 1992
winning 2–0 with a
team of former
Soviet Union players
from the other
republics. The "new"
Russian team has
qualified for the
final tournamnet
four times
(including this).
Their best
performance is still
not beyond the group
stage. As soviet
Union the team can
look back at three
WC-quarterfinals
(58,62 70) and one
European
championship (1960)
